The facility’s most striking feature is the expansive glazed entry, which combines fixed glazing, sliding doors, and elevated-raked windows. This intricate design was engineered for both compliance and aesthetic integrity, with a particular focus on the precise alignment of mullions with frames above and below. The project also ensured that sliding doors met stringent accessibility standards. Despite the challenge of being located three hours north of the window manufacturer, the project team successfully overcame logistical hurdles, delivering a project that exemplifies excellence in commercial glazing.
PCW Commercial Windows worked in close collaboration with the builder to ensure the seamless integration of glazing with the steel structure of the Monterey Community Facility. This partnership was essential to overcoming challenges and meeting tight deadlines, particularly the goal of completing the project before Christmas. The process began with predetermining frame sizes based on wall truss drawings and working with the builder and architect to design support for the high-level, bespoke raked frames defining the building’s main entrance.
PCW undertook precise measurements, drafting, and fabrication of the raked frames concurrent with the project’s steelwork. Special attention was given to the alignment of mullions with frames above and below, ensuring a cohesive appearance across the entire glazed elevation. This level of detail extended to the door panels, where louvres were aligned perfectly with adjacent fixed frames.
Given the project’s distance from PCW’s factory, careful coordination of site visits, deliveries, and installations was crucial to staying on schedule. The powder coat finish, selected for its durability and aesthetic appeal, required particular care during fabrication, transport, and installation. PCW’s commitment to quality workmanship and meticulous planning ensured the successful completion of the project.
The Monterey Community Facility features a range of Capral products, chosen for their performance and reliability in commercial applications. The project utilizes Capral 400 Series commercial framing, Capral 419 Series 150mm Flushline framing, 900 Series sliding doors with low-profile tracks, 225 Series hinged doors, and 50 Series awning windows. Operable windows are fitted with fly screens featuring stainless steel mesh, and the facility also incorporates extruded louvres and louvred doors, along with Breezway louvres for optimal ventilation.
A combination of glass types was used to meet the project’s energy efficiency and compliance requirements, including 6.38mm ComfortPlus Neutral, 10.38mm ComfortPlus Neutral, 6mm low-E toughened louvre blades, and 6.38mm ComfortPlus Translucent Laminate. All glazing elements were powder-coated in Dulux Duratec Elements Black, ensuring a durable and aesthetically pleasing finish.
To achieve a seamless integration between the glazing and structural steel, PCW supplied custom cover plates, enhancing the cohesion of the overall design. Additionally, all windows and doors in the project were extruded using lower carbon aluminium, reducing the embodied carbon footprint of the facility and contributing to the project’s sustainability goals.
The Monterey Community Facility was designed and constructed to meet the high standards expected by Norths, a client with a history of successful projects with PCW. From the outset, extensive design meetings ensured that all client design needs were met. This design-and-construct endeavour was crafted to adhere to the Building Code of Australia (BCA) and Australian Standards, utilising premium commercial window framing to ensure durability and longevity.
PCW’s in-house team, drawing on years of industry experience, adeptly navigated the challenges posed by intricate raked frames and predetermined window sizes. The result is a finished product that not only meets the functional requirements but also elevates the space’s aesthetic appeal. The quality finishes and thoughtful design elements create an environment of sophistication and excellence, fulfilling the client’s expectations and setting a new standard for community facilities.
The Monterey Community Facility stands as a beacon of excellence in commercial glazing and fenestration. PCW’s meticulous approach to design, fabrication, and installation, combined with the use of high-quality Capral products, resulted in a project that meets the client’s aesthetic and functional demands. This case study highlights PCW’s capability to deliver complex projects on time, within budget, and to the highest standards of quality, ensuring the Monterey Community Facility will serve as a landmark of architectural excellence for years to come.
