Home Fire Studios: ASA Windows Delivers Award-Winning Glazing with Capral Aluminium Systems

Home Fire Studios is part of the landmark Perth Film Studios development in Whiteman, Western Australia, the state’s first purpose-built screen production facility. Designed by Hassell and built by Built, the project provides purpose-built infrastructure for large-scale film, television and digital production. 

The project was recognised at the AGWA Design and Industry Awards, taking out the Commercial Design Project Over $750,000 category. ASA Windows delivered the window and glazing package using Capral Aluminium systems, including AGS 425 Narrowline Double Glazed, AGS 629 Flushline Double Glazed and AGS 225 Commercial Hinged Doors. 

Capral’s AGS 425 Narrowline Double Glazed framing system was used for a range of window and glazing applications across the project. It was configured with double glazing to meet the required thermal and structural performance. 

Capral’s AGS 629 Flushline Double Glazed framing system was used in areas where a flush external finish was required. Its forward-positioned glazing pockets allow the framing to sit closer to the face of the façade, while the option for internal or external glazing was useful in areas with restricted access. 

Capral’s AGS 225 Commercial Hinged Doors were used throughout the development, including reinforced doors up to 1400mm wide. The larger door sizes required careful fabrication and installation, particularly when manoeuvring the assemblies into position on site. 

Additional glazing applications included fritted double glazing within the annex buildings, channel glazing and Capral subframe systems. The fritted glass provided solar control while allowing natural light into the spaces. 

At Level 1, the lack of external access meant the glazing had to be installed from inside the building. ASA Windows pre-glazed the units before manoeuvring them into position internally. 

This required tight manufacturing tolerances, with the pre-glazed units needing to clear the subsill lips during installation. Accurate fabrication and coordination between the manufacturing and installation teams were essential to avoid rework on site. 

Several oversized elements also required crane-assisted installation. The team coordinated lift sequences and site access to position the units safely, while sealants and fixings were tested on site to confirm they met the project requirements. 

Close coordination between ASA Windows, Built and Capral continued from fabrication through to installation. ASA Windows adapted its installation methods to suit the site conditions while managing the different glazing systems and oversized elements across the project. 

The completed installation delivers a consistent glazing solution across Home Fire Studios, combining double glazed windows, flushline framing, reinforced commercial doors and specialist glazing applications. For ASA Windows, the project demonstrates its capability to manufacture and install complex commercial glazing at scale, contributing to an AGWA Award-winning result.
