Aluminium cans transformed into art

Have a look at these works by Detroit artist Noah Deledda. Made by hand, the artist uses pressure on the can to form dents and creases in its surface resulting in these amazing three-dimensional geometric patterns.

The Process Behind the Masterpieces

Deledda’s process begins by scratching away the can’s paint which “reveals a brilliant raw material of the otherwise ordinary consumer item.” He developed his techniques through years of trial and error and charges over two thousand dollars for each piece. That sure beats what we used to get when I did recycling with the boy scouts! This simple yet transformative step exposes the material’s true potential, allowing its natural sheen to enhance the intricate designs. His techniques—perfected over years of trial and error—require exceptional patience and precision, with every fold and dent contributing to the overall symmetry and balance of the piece.

From Consumer Item to Collectible Art

What sets Deledda’s work apart is his ability to take an everyday object and imbue it with artistic significance. Each piece is a one-of-a-kind creation, reflecting the artist’s mastery over material and form. The result? Collectors are willing to pay upwards of $2,000 per piece, turning a common consumer item into a high-value collectible.

Why Aluminium Inspires Art

Deledda’s work highlights the artistic potential of aluminium, a material prized for its unique properties:

  • Ductility and Malleability: Allows for intricate shaping and detailing.
  • Natural Reflectivity: Enhances the visual impact of geometric patterns.
  • Sustainability: As a fully recyclable material, aluminium aligns with modern artistic values of environmental consciousness.
