Dunn Bay: Southcamp

In the heart of Dunsborough, Western Australia, the Southcamp project transformed a former restaurant site into a remarkable mixed-use development.

The architecture seamlessly blended modern design with coastal charm, comprising a microbrewery, a restaurant, and a multi-purpose structure that housed a café, a continental store, and short-stay apartments. The development showcased a contemporary industrial style, featuring exposed structural steel columns, soaring 10-metre-high truss roofs with Bondor ceilings, and polished concrete floors.

Southcamp received significant recognition, winning Best Regional Project and Best Retail Building at the 2023 Master Builders–Commonwealth Bank South West Building Excellence Awards, and being named a finalist for Best Regional Project in the 2023 Master Builders–Commonwealth Bank Excellence in Construction Awards.

Capral’s window and door systems played a crucial role in helping the architects bring their vision to life, creating spaces that seamlessly integrated the indoors with the surrounding landscape. The Capral AGS 400 Narrowline framing system allowed extensive glazed areas that maximised natural light and views, while ensuring structural performance to withstand coastal conditions.

To create seamless transitions between interior spaces and the central courtyard, the architects chose Capral’s Artisan Folding Doors. The Capral AGS 225 Door Frame Series was utilised in areas requiring more traditional door solutions, offering a balance of strength, security, and aesthetic appeal, which was particularly useful in the short-stay apartments and administrative areas.

The Capral AGS 950 Sliding Window system was incorporated to take full advantage of Dunsborough’s scenic beauty and ensure optimal natural ventilation. This system’s ability to accommodate large glass panels contributed to creating spacious, light-filled areas. Complementing the sliding windows, the Capral AGS 900 Sliding Door system was used to create wide openings, especially effective in the restaurant and café areas, where they could be fully opened to create a seamless flow.

The successful implementation of Capral’s window and door systems in the Southcamp project was due to the expert fabrication work carried out by LGA WA.
