Tamar Windows Delivers an Elite Performance Facility for the Dragons with Capral Aluminium Systems

The Bruce Gordon Centre marks a new chapter for the St George Illawarra Dragons, bringing together elite training, administration and community facilities within a purpose-built high-performance centre at the University of Wollongong’s Innovation Campus. Designed by renowned sports architecture firm Populous and delivered by FDC Construction & Fitout, the facility has been created to support both professional athletes and the wider community. The centre features two full-sized training fields, an elite gym and performance space, medical and rehabilitation facilities, sports science areas, education spaces and community facilities, providing a central hub for the club’s future growth and development.

Tamar Windows was selected to manufacture and install the project’s windows, doors and framing systems using Capral Aluminium’s AGS Commercial range. With extensive experience delivering complex commercial glazing packages, Tamar worked closely with Capral, FDC Construction & Fitout and Populous to provide a façade solution that met demanding architectural, acoustic and thermal performance requirements while maintaining the project’s construction programme.

The glazing package incorporates the AGS 1029 Flushline Double Glazed (250mm), AGS 629 Flushline Double Glazed (150mm), AGS 419 Flushline Acoustic and AGS 225 Hinged Door systems. Selected to support both the architectural vision and performance requirements of the facility, the systems were utilised throughout the project to create a durable, high-performing and visually striking building envelope.

The AGS 1029 Flushline Double Glazed (250mm) system was used in key feature areas, including the main entry, where expansive glazed openings were required to maximise natural light and create a strong visual connection between the building and its surroundings. Its robust 250mm framing capacity enabled Tamar Windows to fabricate and install oversized glazed panels, including feature glazing reaching up to 7.5 metres in height, delivering a dramatic architectural statement and enhancing the building’s presence within the Innovation Campus.

The AGS 629 Flushline Double Glazed (150mm) system was utilised throughout the facility to provide a clean, consistent aesthetic while achieving the acoustic performance required for a high-performance sporting environment. With an acoustic rating of Rw (C;Ctr) 40 (-2;-6), the system helped support the separation of training, rehabilitation, administration and community spaces without compromising the overall design intent.

Supporting the project’s acoustic objectives, the AGS 419 Flushline Acoustic system was incorporated throughout key areas of the facility to deliver enhanced sound control and occupant comfort. Complementing the framing systems, the AGS 225 Hinged Door was installed throughout the building, providing durability, accessibility and reliable day-to-day performance for players, staff, visitors and community users.

The project presented several technical and logistical challenges, including the fabrication, transport and installation of large-format glazing elements, coordination with multiple trades and adherence to stringent programme requirements. Through detailed planning, precision fabrication and close collaboration with the wider project team, Tamar Windows successfully delivered a glazing solution that met both the performance requirements and architectural vision of the Bruce Gordon Centre.

As Aaron Pittman, General Manager at Tamar Windows, explained:

“The 250mm Flushline system was one of the defining features of the project. With glazing reaching 7.5 metres in height, the scale of the installation required custom extrusion lengths, detailed engineering coordination and close collaboration between Tamar Windows, Capral and the wider project team. Despite the complexity, the project was delivered on programme and achieved the architectural vision for this world-class facility.”

Tamar Windows’ contribution was instrumental in bringing the project’s architectural vision to life. Combining advanced fabrication capabilities with experienced project delivery and installation teams, Tamar successfully delivered a façade solution that balanced aesthetics, performance and constructability. Working alongside Capral, FDC Construction & Fitout and Populous, Tamar delivered a glazing package that showcases the capability of Australian-manufactured aluminium systems and local industry expertise.

The completed Bruce Gordon Centre represents a lasting investment in the future of the St George Illawarra Dragons and the wider Illawarra community. Together, Tamar Windows and Capral Aluminium have delivered a durable, high-performing façade that will support the facility and its users for years to come.
